Service Observations

It is proposed to start a service observing programme at the HCT for programmes that require up to six hours of observing time, inclusive of calibration data. Service time is normally allocated for programmes that require a small amount of data to complete a programme, or require a few hours of observing time, or to look at individual targets of interest.

Service proposal deadlines will be set four times each year at three-monthly intervals. The proposals will be graded by the HTAC, a process which may take 3-4 weeks, before being accepted into the service programme. The service proposals will be accepted for the next cycle, beginning 2004 May and the deadline is on Apr 1, 2004 .

SERVICE DEADLINES ARE APRIL 1, JULY 1, OCTOBER 1, and JANUARY 1

DETAILS

Service proposals may be submitted for programmes that require up to six hours observing time. The three instruments: HFOSC, NEAR-IR CAMERA and the OPTICAL CCD CAMERA will be available for service observations.

Service proposal deadlines are set at regular 3-month intervals (January, April, July and October)

Service proposals will be refereed by the HTAC, normally within three to four weeks of the service proposal deadline. If further information is required then a service proposal may be returned to the applicant for modification.

The service proposals will be graded on a scale of 1 (low) to 5 (high) and an average grade assigned. Proposals assigned an average grade below 2.5 will not be granted HCT time. After a proposal has been refereed, the HTAC will advise the sender of the average grade assigned by the referees.

Service proposals expire after a period of one year but may be resubmitted if desired.

Data will be made available as FITS format files, and written onto CDRoms.

All conditions regarding HCT observations applicable to the regular observing programmes apply to service observations also.

Full details of the observing strategy are required.subsection

Instructions for filling the Proposal Form

Please indicate the instrument to be used for service observations, with the required mode of observation.

List the filters/grisms to be used by checking the appropriate box(es) in the form. Also, clearly indicate the slit to be used for spectroscopic observations.

List of objects to be provided with proper identification charts. The magnitude of the object and the required exposure time are to be specified.

Please note that the proposal will be rejected if no object list is provided.

State if observations of standards are required. If you have any particular standard to be observed, please list the same in the source list.

Indicate if photometric conditions are absolutely essential.

Any additional information such as mosaicing strategy, slit position angles, etc, that will assist with the observations may be mentioned.

Please indicate if the proposed observations are closely related to any HCT proposal which you or your colleagues have submitted or intend to submit. If so, then include, in the scientific justification, specific reasons why service mode is required.

Note: Projects for which observing time is pending will not normally be considered for service time to accquire the same or similar data
