My computer skillset

General

Programming experience: scientific, OO programming, RDBMS; mostly applications.

Skillset

  • Languages: (over 5 years) C, IRAF (Image Reduction & Analysis Facility); (3 years) IDL (Interactive Data Language); C++; Mathematica, Matlab, UNIX Shell Script, LATeX
  • Web: HTML, DHTML, JavaScript.
  • Platforms: Sun Sparc/Ultra Sparc workstations, HP Intel Pentium PCs, Silicon Graphics Challenge 10000/Indy R5000
  • Operating Systems: SunOS, Solaris2.51, IRIX, UNIX, WINDOWS 98/95, Linux (RedHat, SuSE, Slackware).
  • Databases: SQL (ANSI 92, and some other versions).
  • CAD Tools: Ximtool, XV, Xpaint, GIMP.

Work & projects:

  • Image processing (statistical and pattern recognition analyses) of multi-MB data cubes from astrophysical databases to study time-dependent behaviour, flow maps and magnetic field diffusion (part of PhD thesis). (programs in C, IDL and IRAF).
  • Member of the programmer team for the future Indian Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SoXS) satellite-borne experiment.
  • Currently, developing an interface for an OO representation of natural language structure, as part of a computational linguistic research program in semantic information theory.
  • Some minor small-term projects undertaken include: Wrote an automatic e-mail response and signal software (in C) to automate the handling of the large volume of incoming e-mail during the International Astronomical Union colloquium 179 1999.
Wrote an updatable-through-email database for graduate students at the Indian Inst. of Astrophysics.
Wrote a shell script e-mail filter system.
  • Exploring new algorithms in quantum computation that can provide exponential speed-up over corresponding classical algorithms; in particular, for the Travelling Salesman. (A few introductory lectures I have been giving on this topic can be found here .
