Regular Post-Doctoral Fellowships

Applications are invited from candidates with a Ph.D degree in Physical / Mathematical Sciences from a recognized University / Institute. The Institute offers challenging opportunities to young researchers working in theory, observation and instrumentation in various areas of research in the field of astronomy and astrophysics. The duration of the fellowship is normally two years, with a possible extension for another year. Candidates should preferably be below the age of 36 years.

IIA operates major observatories across the country: the Indian Astronomical Observatory, Hanle, Ladakh, the Vainu Bappu Observatory, Kavalur, Kodaikanal Solar Observatory, Kodaikanal, the Gauribidanur Observatory, Gauribidanur.

IIA is also a key partner in the ultraviolet telescope payload (UVIT) onboard India’s first multi-wavelength space observatory ASTROSAT, and in India’s participation in the next generation mega optical and infrared telescope facility, the “Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) International Observatory” or TIO being built on Mauna Kea, Hawaii, USA. India-TMT and UVIT may have openings for post doctoral positions. Interested candidates are directed to the respective web pages for the same.

Selected candidates, as post doctoral fellows, are expected to work in close collaboration with members of the research groups at the institute and are also encouraged to carry out independent research.

Emoluments: Depending on qualification and experience, IIA offers a fixed fellowship of Rs 36,000 - 40,000 p.m with annual increment of Rs. 1500 p.m. Other allowances such as house rent, book grants, medical facility are offered in accordance with the prevailing rules of the institute. IIA has limited accommodation for PDFs which will be provided subject to availability and need as assessed by the committee, case by case.


Chandrasekhar Post-Doctoral Fellowships

Applications are invited from exceptionally bright candidates with outstanding academic credentials for the award of 'Chandrasekhar Post-Doctoral Fellowships' in all areas of astronomy and astrophysics.

The fellowship is for a period of two years with a possibility of an extension for one more year. Candidates should be ordinarily below the age of 32 years.

Emoluments: The monthly stipend is Rs. 50,000/- to Rs. 55,000/- for candidates with up to 2 years post-doctoral experience and Rs.55,000/- to 60,000/- for those with more than 2 years experience. Chandra Fellows would be entitled to an annual contingency grant of Rs.2,00,000/-, as well as to housing (subject to availability), medical and other benefits in accordance with the prevailing rules of the institute. Travel support by economy air fare will be available at the time of taking up the assignment. Chandra Fellows may choose their own research topics or collaborate with groups or individuals in the institute.


How to apply to both programmes

PDF applications will be reviewed four times a year : in the first week of January, April, July and October. Under special circumstances, the committee may review applications at other times as well.

Applicants should send complete CV, biodata, statement of proposed work to be carried out at IIA and also arrange to send three letters of recommendation directly. Applicants are advised to send their completed applications at least 3 weeks before the respective review dates. Applicants to the Chandrasekhar Fellowship should explicitly state the same in their application.
