The objective of the conference, “Chemical elements in the Universe: origin and evolution”, is to take stock of current understanding of origin and evolution of chemical elements and their abundances in the Universe, and hence, celebrate the 150 years of the periodic table. The conference will high light the work on chemical elements - their abundances and distribution in stars (including the Sun), the Milky Way, interstellar medium and other galaxies. The idea of this conference is to explore key questions related to elemental abundances and their inferences in understanding the physical universe starting from big bang nucleosynthesis to the present. Solar and solar system abundances, standard cosmic abundances, sites for formation of chemical elements, abundance distributions in disk (thin, thick, ultra-thin) and halo of our Galaxy, nuclear processes for generation of elements, historical developments, etc. will be deliberated. Finally, we take stock of future endeavors and discuss the upcoming spectroscopic surveys and mega facilities. This conference is also to commemorate Prof. Vainu Bappu, Founder Director of IIA, who had keen interest in high resolution spectroscopy and elemental abundances in stars. He worked on elemental abundances in Cepheids among other things. He also designed a high resolution spectrograph for 1-meter telescope at Vainu Bappu Observatory, Kavalur, India.

On behalf of the SAC we are pleased to invite academic faculty and scientists, postdoctoral fellows, and PhD students to participate in this conference.
