Relativistic, Magnetic and Dynamical Astrophysics

Principal Investigator : Arun Mangalam (Home page) Project duration : March 2019--October 2022

Over the past several decades or so, key and outstanding theoretical astrophysical problems have assumed interplay of several physical concepts in plasma physics, radiation transfer besides relativity and stellar dynamics. We project science cases of some of these problems that have the inherent complexity due to this interplay but applied to the cases of the Magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) in the Sun; stellar, gas dynamics, hamiltonian mechanics and electrodynamics around black holes, structure and dynamics of galaxies. The predictions aim to make new advances in understanding variety of phenomena like magnetic topology and flare mechanisms, tidal disruption events around massive black holes and their observational appearance, quasi periodic oscillations observed in black hole systems besides cosmological formation of black holes. All the proposals are aimed at making predictions for current and future observations from various ground and space based telescopes that India is currently participating in such as ADITYA (studying solar atmosphere problems), ASTROSAT (black holes), TMT (black holes, galaxies and cosmology science cases), and LIGO (black holes).
