Title: Birth and Growth of Solar Physics in India

Abstract: This talk traces the birth of modern solar physics in India, beginning with observations of the 1868 total solar eclipse by astronomers of the Madras Observatory, and its subsequent growth over the years. The early period saw the setting up of the Kodaikanal Observatory in 1901 and the commencement of regular and uninterrupted observations. These have revealed a wealth of new information about the sun. The last few decades have seen the proliferation of various observational and theoretical facilities, along with the establishment of major groups spread across several institutions in the country. Current research programmes in solar physics along with recent developments in the field will be highlighted. In addition, new national initiatives such as the multiwavelength satellite ADITYA, with a suite of instruments to observe the sun from space, and the proposed National Large Solar Telescope will also be discussed.
