Title: Looking Ahead in Space Astronomy

Abstract: India has a growing presence in using space as a platform for research. In particular, astrophysics research from satellites shows increasing linkages with ground-based research and observations. While the need to pursue this in regions of the electromagnetic spectrum that are obstructed by Earth’s atmosphere is well accepted, the uniqueness of space with ability to provide diffraction-limited data, is also stimulating space experiments in other parts of the spectrum. Our first dedicated space astronomy mission, ASTROSAT continues to provide important results and is expected to continue to operate for a few more years. Looking beyond ASTROSAT, I will discuss some considerations underway in the planning for future space astronomy missions in India where many research institutions and Universities are expected to contribute in a significant way.
