In general, planetaria around the world rely on a projector which casts images and movies on a passive dome. The planetarium system that will be installed in Mysuru is unique since it will not have a projector at all. Instead, the dome is made of panels of LED lights, which are directly controlled by a computer system. The planetarium show is then displayed through the LED lights in the dome itself. The advantage is that the LED dome provides much better contrast with 8K resolution and does away with problems of conventional projection systems.
There are only two installations of such a system in the world (in Japan) for public viewing, and are operated by the vendor themselves. This planetarium in Mysuru will be the first tilted LED dome planetarium in the world that is being supplied by the vendor to an independent customer.
The planetarium construction is in progress.
