Overview

Imaging in the ultra-violet regime with a spectral resolution of 1.8" (about 3x better than Galex) in a field of ~28' provides many opportunities for Galactic and extra-galactic studies. UVIT is primarily an imaging instrument. A set of filters are provided along with a grating for low resolution (R ~100) slitless spectroscopy.

The Ultra-Violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) is a part of the AstroSat multi-wavelength space observatory, operational since 2015. The core science areas include:

  • Star formation in the Galaxy and nearby galaxies
  • Star formation history of the universe
  • Hot stars in globular clusters
  • Planetary nebulae
  • Transients and variability studies in UV
