VISITING VAINU BAPPU OBSERVATORY

The Vainu Bappu Observatory is open to the public every Saturday throughout the year in general. The public outreach program begins at 2:00 PM and continues until 10:00 PM, depending on the weather conditions.

What to See:

  • Vainu Bappu Telescope (VBT): The VBT is a 2.3-meter diameter telescope gives you a glimpse into the cutting-edge technology and research that goes into understanding the universe.

  • Solar Tower Telescope: A Coelostat (pronounced "see-lo-stat") is a device used in astronomy to reflect sunlight into a fixed location. It typically consists of two mirrors. It projects Solar image and spectrum on the screen.

  • Stargazing: Our evening stargazing program offers visitors the chance to view a variety of celestial objects through our 5" and 6" telescopes and high-powered 25x100 binoculars. These programs are dependent on clear skies.

The Upcoming Facilities:

  • Visitors′ Center: In the Visitors' Center, you'll find a wide variety of informational materials and models related to space and astronomy.

  • Astronomy Museum: Vainu Bappu Observatory has been operational for over fifty years. Visitors will be able to see some of the once-used telescopes, instruments, and discoveries made with them at the museum.

Entry Tickets

The entry ticket costs Rs. 50/- per person and will be issued at the security gate. Children under the age of 12 do not need a ticket. You will be able to purchase entry tickets at the security gate between 2:00 pm and 04:30 pm; if you are interested in only participating in the sky-observation programme, the ticket counter operates between 6:30 PM and 7:15 PM.
