Solar magnetohydrodynamics, MHD waves, solar flares and coronal mass ejections, solar dynamo theory.

Research Interest (s) : My primary interest is in the application of computational magneto hydrodynamics to study the Sun - from the solar interior to the corona e.g., quiet sun phenomena like the formation of spicule forest as well as eruptive phenomena like flares and coronal mass ejections. My recent simulation (Chatterjee et. al. 2016, Phys. Rev. Lett) has, for the first time, shown how delta sunspots can form, and flare repeatedly, releasing solar-like energies. I am the developer (owner) and one of the maintainers of the open source, massively MPI parallel radiative MHD code - the Pencil code hosted at https://github.com/pencil-code/. I incorporate new and insightful modules in the Pencil Code to make solar MHD simulations more realistic. The synthetic data from the such simulations can then be forward modeled to churn out observables which are directly measured by existing space instruments like Hinode/IRIS/AIA/HMI and hopefully VELC/SUIT on board Aditya-L1 (in future). I am a member of the VELC science team at IIA and the broader Aditya Science working Group (ASWG).
