Stars and Galaxies

Research in the area of stars, stellar systems and galaxies covers a broad range of topics. Some of the main areas are exoplanets, star formation and the study of the interstellar medium and dynamics of the milky way galaxy, study of neighborhood galaxies such as the Magellanic clouds and those in the local group, activity in galaxies and the time domain astronomy.

1. Star formation and Young Stellar Objects  INSTAR: IIA's research Network on STArfoRmation

Studies of young stars in star-forming regions, and young clusters and embedded clusters, and star forming clouds mainly to understand the global scenario of star formation; study of Herbig Ae/Be stars and their properties.

2.Open and Globular Clusters  Go to Top

Open star clusters of all ages to understand the evolution of stars of various mass, peculiar stars in old open clusters including blue stragglers, binaries with WD as companions, stellar population in open cluster remnants. Study of hot stars in Globular clusters, understanding stars in the horizontal branch, blue stragglers and near the turn-off, multiple stellar population, RR Lyrae and peculiar stars in globular clusters.

3. Study of the chemical and dynamical history of Milkyway Galaxy  Go to Top

Study of the chemical and dynamical history of the Galaxy through the abundance and kinematic studies of stars in the disk and the halo, such as the metal poor and extreme metal poor stars, barium stars, CH stars, carbon enhanced metal poor (CEMP) and CEMP-s stars, hydrogen deficient stars, Li abundant K giants.

4. Stars  Go to Top

Circumstellar envelopes around evolved stars, Be stars and their variability, post-AGB stars, planetary nebulae and their central stars, binary stars using speckle interferometry, symbiotic stars.

5. Exoplanets  Go to Top

Study of transiting exoplanets, and detection of non-transiting planets through transit time variations of transiting exoplanets, understanding the correlation between the host star metallicity and the probability of hosting planets.

6.The Interstellar Medium  Go to Top

A study of the diffuse background in the UV, understanding the ISM through variability in the ISM features.

7. The Magellanic Clouds  Go to Top

Study of the Magellanic system comprising of the LMC and SMC Bridge and the stream, understanding the structure, formation and evolution of the system, stellar populations, gas and stellar dynamics, identification and characterisation of star clusters.

8. Star formation in external galaxies  Go to Top

Study of recent star formation in nearby galaxies, understanding the star formation in the outer disks of galaxies, star formation in isolated dwarf galaxies, star formation in quasar hosts to understand the AGN starburst connection.

9. Evolution of galaxies  Go to Top

Understanding the evolution of galaxies in different environments using both numerical simulations and multi-wavelength observations, study how galaxies evolve in the late stages of galaxy mergers and in isolated regions like voids, the role of disk dynamics such as bars in the secular evolution of spiral galaxies.

10. Time Domain Astronomy  Go to Top

Classical and recurrent novae, Supernovae, Gamma-ray bursts, Fast Transients, EM counterparts of GW events, Pulsars, Variability in AGN, Tidal disruption events
